Introduction to SEO

Author: Joe Whyte

For my first blog I would like to start with the basics of SEO. For anyone who knows little or nothing about SEO you might find this helpful and for those who do know about SEO, stay tuned as I will be giving more tips and tricks to help you dominate your industry.

NEWB’s

When you purchase your first hosting account and attempt to “go live”, no matter what your site is about, you will want to be sure that you can be found online. Attempting to make your site pull up for a specific term is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The best advice I can give is to stick with it. Before you know it you will be the master of your domain “literally”.

Organic Listings

An organic listing or natural listing is a listing that is shown on the results page NOT associated with ads which are normally found on the right hand side and the very top of the SERP’s. Organic listings are not paid for and are not ads.

Link Popularity

The backbone to any SEO campaign has got to be its inbound linking structure. Increasing the amount of quality relevant sites that link to you will not only help your site be cached and crawled more frequently but also increase the rankings of your site.

Page Content

Fresh content is always a plus. If you do copy content from another site first make sure it is not copywriten. Secondly you will want to stay away from duplicate content as the search engines can tell and could possibly penalize you for this. The best practice is to create your own content that is keyword rich. Make sure to not keyword stuff as that is a blackhat technique.

Stay way from Black Hat if you wish to live!

Please never NEVER be caught by the search engines for doing black hat techniques. These techniques are considered unethical by the search engines and if they catch you they will ban your site from the search engines. If you ever do get your site back into their listings you will have a very VERY hard time getting back to the place you where before.

Stay tuned for more!
