Top 6 reasons why to NOT buy a Google Domain Name

Author: Joe Whyte

As someone who frequently uses Google search I was excited to hear that they are now setting themselves up to offer domain name registration. Google has been a registrar for a while now but the news that they are now going to actually be selling domain names was inevitable. The Google domains are actually in partnership with godaddy and Enom. Google will be charging $10 annual fee and only handle addresses ending in four suffixes — “.com,” “.net,” “.biz” and “.info”. The target is more popular domains but there are 250 of other domain extensions that Google will not be targeting. If you are a webmaster and SEO here are the top reason’s to NOT buy a Google domain name.

Top Reason to NOT buy a Google Domain Name:

6. Google is trying to take over the world and we are letting them

5. Google only allows .com .net .biz and .info registration

4. Google only wants more access to domain name registration information and are using Boss Hog tactics to gain momentum.

3. Google will now know if a transfer of ownership occurred and might re-evaluate a domain names worth and PR

2. Google will be able to access private registration’s through their domain name registration services

1. Google will undoubtedly use this to combat webmaster’s trying to bypass Google’s filters

For webmaster’s and SEO’s who want to bypass any search engine filters it would be a good idea to not buy a domain name through a search engine. ON the other hand if you are just out looking for a great deal then Google seems to be offering an incredible deal and I am projecting a large number of people to actually start purchasing domain names through them.

I totally feel you on this. I have purchased sites that already have PR and rankings to bypass the filters. I would hate for them to catch onto this because I would loose money! Thanks Joe!

I never thought about that but yea I can see that.

I think you miss understand. Google is not registering your domain. Your domain is held by a normal registrar, like Godady, or eNorm. Google is simply just trying to make it easier to use Google Apps if you don’t not already own a domain.

I imagine many small business owners might not know a lot about technology or DNS and just want to get their email up and running. This service will let them do it.

I can’t say if they are out to take over the world or not, but if they are, I would think they would want to registrar the domains them self and not pass them off to a partner.

Google is actually a domain name registrar; see here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/01/google_domain_seller/)

It looks like they are utilizing a partnership via a reseller program kinda like tucows does with many sites but different ;-)

Companies who are under the ICANN accreditation are able to see registrants personal information IF that person register’s through them.

Here is Google on the list from ICANN:

I think what Joe was trying to get at is that if people buy THROUGH Google then that gives Google the authority to see more detailed information on the domain name. As of right now they can only utilize whois services. From what the Associated Press said is that Google is not only a registrar but is now setting up a service for people to buy domain names through them. The partnership is simply a means to be able to do this effeciently.

    LOL!!

Oh Google.. Please don’t let this blog entry affect our page rank.. our 0/10 page rank..

Is it possible to be ranked -10?

  9. Lunartics Help7 Says:

    $10? Pretty expensive…
They already penalyze expired domains, and even those that never get deleted, but change hands at some market places. This is just the next step.

  10. Lunartics Smokestach Says:

I think they do know about expired domain names. They don’t know about websites that do a transfer of ownership though. They do now.

I heard google is going to shut you guys down for saying this though!!!!

  11. Lunartics Jeba Says:

all the claims are not valid.. don’t you use GMAIL ?? if we think this way they they already have access to our personal and professional mails!!

  12. Lunartics crazy disco Says:

I think anyone into SEO would know these claims are VALID. Exploiting sandbox filter and domian age filter is something any SEO would love to bypass.

No it is not really safe to use gmail as you can see here. The security flaw has been fixed but at one time this was a huge issue in the Google world right around the time they entered china search industry.
