Content Management Systems

Author: Mitch Keeler

So what is all this talk about CMS about? CMS is Web developer geek speak for a content management system. This is a kind of brain or back end for your Web site. The Lunartics Web site here has a CMS installed. It’s CMS would be WordPress.

There are hundreds of good systems out there to choose from though.

So then, how do you find the best? Well I would recommend finding a Web site you like, and then E-mail the author and ask him or her what they are running “under the hood”. This is one great way to get good suggestions for content management systems.

One really great resource would be OpenSourceCMS.com. Here you will find a number of free and open source content management systems to play with. Scroll down until you find the “CMS Demo Menu” and then have fun. I honestly could probably spend a day and a half looking through all the different Web site brains they have listed there. From WordPress to Vanilla – they have just about everything covered.

Do you have a favorite content management system? Feel free to share!

Have you heard of our recently released open source CMS, SilverStripe?

It’s not active on OpenSourceCMS.com yet (I’ve mailed a request) but we’ve tried to make a really simple, intuitive interface for content authors, while still keeping the system flexible for designers and developers.

I’d appreciate your feedback. A demo is available here; bear in mind that the demo is running the author interface, and doesn’t let you see how to create new data-types with custom fields.

Hey Sam, looks very clean and nice – and you definitely have a nice admin interface from what I have quickly seen as well. Good work! I haven’t heard of you before but I’ll have to keep an eye on your work for sure.
