6 Ways to Make URLs Shorter

Author: Mitch Keeler

I hate it when I find a good Web page and the URL is so long and complicated, trying to cut and paste it to send it to a friend is almost impossible. That is where “URL shortening” services play a helpful hand. This way you can turn that long and complicated URL into something you can easily type or remember. There are a slew of choices Online, and here are some of the best of the best.

TinyURL

DwarfURL

doiop.com

SnipURL

shorl.com

TightURL

Out of all of them, I would say DwarfURL is probably my favorite, just because it gives you some statistical information about you links as well.

Thanks for the write-up Mitch. I had only previously used tinyurl a few times, but I like the idea that with dwarfurl you can see the stats on the link

one of those urlchop sites posted a page that included a comparison chart for ~~10 urlcompacting sites. i think the comparison is considered a niche classic, but i doubt it’s been updated.

it’s amazing how many characteristics there can be.

btw, i usually prefer the original url, because i can see where I’m going. (of course you could put that real url into a “tooltip” (a href title attrib). Also if the url is a google search or (archived) ng msg, you can manually cut off much of the urlbloat.
