IT Industry – Is Stress Killing Our Techs?

Author:  Amy Armitage

I read an interesting post this morning at Tech Republic about the super high levels of stress within our IT industry.

It poses the question… what other industries do you believe experience the same stress levels?  Should our system admins get danger money? ;)

I’ve got to agree – people in IT might not do much physical labor, but the mental stress that goes on is mind-numbing at times. I know a lot of folks that just work themselves too hard as well when it comes to “IT-related” work too.

I want stress pay when we launch plan upgrades. :)

Well, that would have to be air traffic control personnel or people who launch space shuttles. Yeah, I think launching space shuttles would be a more high-stress occupation than launching a new web application.

Stress? Did someone say stress in relation to working in IT? Sounds like a study in the making… ;) more details coming soon I hope… just as soon as I get enough off of my plate so I can get to it…

Okay, another update now that I’ve got a little more time on my hands… interesting side note about the study cited in the article. The study itself was published in 1996, meaning it was probably conducted 1 to 2 years (possibly even 2-3 years) prior to being published…. not sure what it says that it takes someone 10-11 years to actually mention the study and even then it probably goes largely unnoticed…
