WordPress Design Contest – Vote on Round 1!
By Amy Armitage
So the results are in, and the first week of voting in Lunarpages Web Hosting’s WordPress Theme Design Competition is open! There have been an incredibly array of submissions, and it was our task to try and pick our top 5 favorites, which was extremely hard by the way. Everyone who’s submitted so far has amazing potential and we’re so excited to continue to see submissions! So keep ‘em coming!
Our top 5 favorites for the first week are:
1. Christmas is Near by Nicki Faulk
2. Passion for Design by Jorge Quan
3. Lauryn 1.0 by Lauryn
4. Mao Sugary by Maoohang
Now it’s time to vote on which WordPress Theme is your favorite! Remember, voting starts today and ends on Sunday, December 16, and the winner of this week has an automatic chance at being in the final 12 at the close of the contest.
Good luck everyone, and keep submitting!
* Poll has ended. See results here

It’s going to be very hard to have a good contest without at least a larger image than what you’re giving us there. This is like asking “what’s your favorite color.”
Even better would be a test blog with a theme switcher and some dummy content.
Carping aside, it’s good to see a new theme contest!

Can you make a link to higher resolution pics… they are too small…

They are all so good! :) Matt – here is what they are fighting for:

It is hard to judge based only on a screenshot. I am more interested in the functionality of the theme. Liquid width themes working properly at different browser window sizes, sidebar widgets support, cross browser functionality, etc. Lets face it, just about anyone can make a pretty screenshot but that does not make for a prize winning theme.

@Matt Wiebe – I have granted your wish….heh. You can now click on the theme image to see the theme in action.

Somebody jacksoned the votes. Lauryn’s design is top-notch. The revival one looks boring.

Given the enduring popularity of identikit themes with big blue headers, I’d say it was a pretty savvy attempt to get his hands on the cash ;)
December 12th, 2007 at 6:45 am
I like Mikes, it is a very clean and attractive design, as is Nicki Faulks. But, i think that Mike Noceks would last as i cannot see people using a Christmas / Winter template through the seasons.
Good luck to all though.

The votes havn’t been tampered with. I can prove it if needed.
December 12th, 2007 at 9:11 am
Well done Todd. A couple of more posts with things like images, blockquotes, ul and ol lists would take it from good to great, but this is way better than just than thumbnails!

Um, upgrade … successful? And vote for me!!…
Well, the upgrade took a little longer than expected, and I had postponed it until this morning instead of last night. (my apologies to those who had trouble accessing the site today!) Everything went pretty well, except for my Links page. It seems …

I have the Christmas is Near theme live at my site now. Thanks, Nicki!
December 12th, 2007 at 9:58 pm
Just another little side note, if my design looks a little bare it was because I ran out of time. In a future release there is meant to be a glossy transparent white login box in the top left of the header and the logo is meant to be on the right.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Mike’s is for a more simple, symetrical design.
Think of the decision like this: Yes, it’s near Christmas time. But would you vote for a Christmas theme all year long??? And use it all year long??? No, so that’s why I think Mike’s the best!
December 13th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
I call shenanigans. How u gonna prove it Mike?
December 13th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
OMGawd Kaanon.. stop messing with everyone’s minds..
LOL.. sheesh..
December 13th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Personally, if mine wasn’t one of the entries, I’d have voted for ‘Mao Sugary’ by Maoohang … after all, I am partial to red! ;)

Bill: “Lets face it, just about anyone can make a pretty screenshot but that does not make for a prize winning theme.”
Click on the screenshot to see the theme itself – not a picture!
Mike’s is the Best!

Stop cheating NIkki… We now you ARE. There is no possible way to go up 90 points like you did earlier in a matter of minutes.
December 15th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Yes, it’s near Christmas time. But would you vote for a Christmas theme all year long???
YES, because there is a serious dearth of free holiday themes, and *all* the others I’ve found contain all sorts of sponsored links, including semi-hidden ones. I can delete spammy domain links in sponsored themes, but there are a ton of WP users who have no clue how to do that. Sure, I won’t use the theme all year (!), but it’s exactly what I was looking for over the last two months for the holiday season.
Also, as one who builds WP themes as well, I especially appreciate that it has good coding and works in all browsers! :)

I don’t cheat, and it didn’t go up in a matter minutes … it went up over the course of several hours Saturday. If you want to point fingers at a score that “jumps up suddenly” I suggest you re-examine the numbers.
December 16th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
This is getting ridiculus, I don’t expect that anyone is cheating. All the themes submitted are top quality. There is also no point in cheating since this isn’t the final… Six of the themes that make it into the final will not be determined by the votes. LunarPages staff choose 6 and votes choose 6. I’m sure there is some system in place to prevent cheating.
December 16th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
I voted for Revival. Christmas Is Near is OK, but I wouldn’t want a Christmas theme all year round (I wouldn’t want one at all actually)
