Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

30 January, 2008 - Amy Armitage, Fluff, SEO, Website Tools

By Amy Armitage

So I got this email late yesterday and I really had trouble working out the answer. A few of us in the office are going back and forth yelling out random answers.

Here it is…

There are 7 girls in a bus
Each girl has 7 backpacks
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

Does the answer come to you quickly or are you still trying to figure it out?

Hint: I was being all clever and stuff and I counted the bus driver’s legs too. Apparently there isn’t a bus driver, just a bunch of school girls sitting on a bus that’s not moving with too many backpacks and a cat collecting hobby .. lol

Who stuffs that many cats into a backpack anyway? I think I should call the animal protection society ;)

What does a girl need with 7 backpacks?

we had this question in a math class, and i won a prize for it.
    the answer is definately 10,990

    7 girls x 2 legs = 14 girl legs
    343 cats x 4 legs = 1372 cat legs (49 big cats per girl, 4 legs each)
2401 kittens x 4 legs = 9604 kittens legs (multiply big cats by seven to get how many kittens, 4 legs each)
    14 girl legs + 1372 cat legs + 9604 kittens legs = 10,990 legs
with the bus driver it’s 10, 992, but no one said anything about a driver.

    10,990

Are you sure the answer is a number? The message you get is to “be sure to use the correct CAPITALIZATION”. Hmmmm.

  • dan

    *7 girls = 14 legs* (7 girls x 2 legs = 14 legs)

    7 girls x 7 backpacks = 49 backpacks
    49 backpacks x 7 cats = 343 cats

    *343 cats = 1372 legs* (343 cats x 4 legs = 1372)

    343 cats x 7 kittens = 2401 kittens

    *2401 kittens = 9604 legs* ( 2401 kittens x 4 legs = 9604 legs)

    **14 girl legs + 1372 cat legs + 9604 kitten legs = 10990 LEGS**

There are several ways to solve this, but here’s what worked for me

It’s easier if you figure out how many cats there are per bag first and not just just to skip multiplying by 7′s and 4′s first 9 as I first thought)

we know there are 7 kittens+1 big cat = 8 cats per family
there are 7 families in each backpack….7×8 = 56 cats per backpack (not 49 as one might think…you leave out the big cats that way)
    and there are 7 backpacks and 7 girls = 49 X 56 =2744 total cats
each cat has 4 legs=2744X4 = 10976 total cat legs
each girl has 2 legs and there are 7 girls = 14 girl legs

    14 girl legs + 10976 cat legs = 10990 total legs

  • SMARTER THAN U ALL

ALOT OF PEOPLE R STUPID ITS 10 990 legs OKAY?? THERE GO DO SOMETHING MORE USEFUL U ALL KNOW IT NOW SO BYE.

  • Sue

I got the answer of 10,990 but how do you type that in the password…..10,990 or Ten Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety or can anyone tell me the exact way to type it in the password…..do you leave spaces inbetween or not? only numbers? Capital letters on the words? I have tired everyway and it won’t work.

  • Sandy

    10,990 legs

    7G X 2 legs = 14 legs
    7G X 7 backpacks = 49 backpacks
    7 Big Cats X 49 backpacks = 343 Big Cats
    343 Big Cats x 4 legs = 1,372 legs
    343 Big Cats X 7 Little Cats = 2,401 Little Cats
    2,401 Little Cats X 4 Legs = 9,604 legs

    14 legs + 1,372 legs + 9,604 legs = 10,990 total legs (no mention of a bus driver)

  • Rhonda

7girls( each girl have 2 legs)
    7×2= 14 girls legs
7 backpacks for each of the girls
    7×7 =49
7 big cats in each of the 7 bags
    49×7=343(bc) x4 legs each = 1372 big cat legs
7 little cat for each big cat
    343×7= 2401 x4 legs each = + 9604 little cat legs
    __________________
Legs in the bus 10,990 total

Unless there is a bus driver making 2 more legs then
    10,992 total legs
