Exclude Your IP from Your Google Analytics Stats

30 April, 2009 - Mitch Keeler, Web Host Support, Website Tools

Want to stop tracking yourself on your web site statistics provided by Google Analytics?  For this, you can use filters.  The filters in Google Analytics are there to manipulate the final data to give a more accurate report.

To add a filter, click on the edit link for the web page you wish to add the filter for.

edit profile link from Google Anyaltics

Next, scroll down the page, till you find the section labeled Filters Applied to Profile.  Now, click on the + Add Filter link.

Add a filter to Google Anyaltics

Here we get into the meat and potatoes on how to add a filter.  Choose Add new Filter for Profile, and give it a name (it could be anything – I named mine “Mitch’s IP Rule”).  Under Filter Type, you can choose to filter by:

  • Exclude all traffic from a domain
  • Exclude all traffic from an IP address
  • Include only traffic to a subdirectory
  • Custom Filter

To exclude your own IP address, you want to choose Exclude all traffic from an IP address.  This filter works to exclude clicks from certain sources. You can enter a single IP address, or a range of addresses.  In the text box marked for your Regular Expression for the IP addresses, type in your IP address, and then hit the Save Changes button.

If you are unsure what your IP address is, there are a number of different online resources for finding that information out.  For example, try whatismyip.com.

Now, your surfing habits through your own web site should not be picked up by Google Analytics.  Remember though, if your IP address changes, you may need to update your rule again.
