Site of the Month – Space Gun Studios

30 November, 2011 - Contests, Interviews, Issue 50 - December 2011, Lunarpages Blog, Site of the Month

We would like to thank everyone for your submissions for our site of the month contest. This month our winners are the interesting creators of Space Gun Studios. In this interview, we had the pleasure of getting some behind the scenes information from Luan, who is one of the four awesome members of Space Gun Studios!

How long have you hosted your site with Lunarpages and which hosting plan are you using?

We have been with Lunarpages since 2005, which means our hosting plan isn’t even offered anymore! But I believe we use what is considered the Basic Plan.

What makes you stay with Lunarpages?
Lunarpages has been very good to us over the years, offering wicked fast customer service that is always polite and personal. We never had any issues with server down time either.

Tell us a bit about your site and what you do there?
We started out as a web comic in 2005 in our art school college years. It was a gag-a-day comic page (with some story arcs) that reflected our humor and adventures in Denton, TX. Since then we’ve formed Space-Gun Studios, a collective of four creative talents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (and Norman, OK by proxy). We now host our own personal properties as well as offer our creative services in design and illustrations.

Tell us about the design of your site. Did you design it yourself?
Our latest incarnation is the handiwork of awesome studio member Matthew Warlick.

How long have you been creating comics and what got you started?
Each studio member has been dreaming of doing comics since childhood. We grew up on a healthy diet of 90s comics, chromium covers and all. When talking to old childhood friends or classmates, no one is ever surprised when we tell them we’re working on comic books.

What are some of your upcoming projects?
Space-Gunner Paul Milligan is currently wrapping up his God of Rock series; each chapter was created in 24 hours on four consecutive 24-Hour Comic Day. He will be starting up a military steampunk short, Steam 7, with Vinh-Luan Luu in 2012. Jake Ekiss will be continuing on his Glyph Award nominated sci-fi series Solomon Azua. And Matthew Warlick will be launching his own sci-fi thriller series The Old Ones in January.

Which one is your favorite comic? (other than the ones your write)
Each of us has our own personal tastes, but all the studio members are big fans of the independent series Atomic Robo with writer Brian Clevinger and artist Scott Wegener.

Have you been to Comic-con? If so, tell us a memorable experience.
We have not attended the San Diego show; but have attended great conventions like the Dallas Comic-Con, STAPLE! in Austin, TX, and the Baltimore Comic Con in Maryland. One of our best convention experiences was meeting the Atomic Robo guys at STAPLE! in 2010. They are very nice and personable people.

How has the Internet helped your business?
The internet has helped us gained an audience that ten years ago (even five years ago!) would not have been possible. It is a reliable means of content distribution that is attracting more and more readers. We don’t believe in a stark “print vs. digital” debate; we are fully aware that print has its problems and digital has its own set of issues too. The internet and various digital delivery systems are becoming more common place for mainstream audiences. So we have to look forward to predict where the industry is heading; but we also have to look at what business models are working now. The strategy changes year to year, even month to month, as new technology comes out. Five years ago we would not have been talking tablet initiatives and app developments like we are today.

Are you actively engaged in Social Media, do you see any value?
All the members of Space-Gun Studios are very active on various social media. We each have an active Facebook and Twitter; and we all are starting to get into Tumblr as well. Social media is a great way to keep our audience updated on projects, convention appearances, and general banter about news, politics, and nerd culture. And due to the freelance nature of our work, we find that Twitter is like our digital water cooler; it allows us to banter with each other and our peers.

Who is your favorite character and why?
Flycatcher from Fables (Vertigo); his story arc is humble and epic all at the same time. It’s a character introduced as whimsy, torn into tragedy, then reborn as a hero.

Are you a gamer? If so, what is your favorite video game?
All the studio members are gamers to varying degrees. But Luan and Jake are the heaviest gamers. Currently on their favorite lists: Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Shadow of the Colossus, Chrono Trigger, Metal Slug, and Batman: Arkham Asylum/City.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
“Wow! That’s a great question. Tough one, though I mean, what does one gauge his response on? Physical prowess? Keen detection skills? The ability to banter well with super villians?” (Mallrats, 1995). In all seriousness, the ability to BAMPF (via Nightcrawler) would be awesome.

Marvel or DC?
Image!

Apple or PC?
Adobe.

Domain name you wished you owned?
Marvel.com or DCcomic.com cause we would like to make some changes.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us Luan. We wish you the best of luck in your future projects and we expect an invitation to the red carpet of your first blockbuster hit!
