Where’s the party at? http://www.MindSmack.com was contracted to design and develop this high-impact flash website complete with After Effects video animation and a media player that showcases the awesome FLAVOR TRIP video. MindSmack.com President & CEO, Samuel Feuer, Chief Creative Officer, Marcelo Moyano and senior animator, Mike Feuer handcrafted all of the animation and effects. We have edited and animated all of the video for Fergie, Will i am, Taboo and Apl.de.Ap so they have a cool flow of animation and effects for each and are consistent with the site feel. The Doritos product is the coolest and tastiest imaginable. You have to experience it to believe how awesome this flavor trip chip actually is! This was a truly exciting project since there was so much room to explore ideas and demonstrate creativity. The team we put together for this project has won countless major awards including FWA awards and Macromedia (now Adobe) Site of the Day awards.

For more information regarding this award, please visit www.doritosparty.com or www.MindSmack.com

By Joe & Tiara

Joe and I haven’t had much time this week to search for Friday Favs, but we were still able to compile a list of the big stories this week. I just realized, the LP Friday Favs is like a News Digest every week! A very smaaaaall news digest but a digest nevertheless.

Anyway, our first story is the reason we haven’t had much time to link surf: Lunarpages Web Hosting upgraded its storage and bandwidth!!! For those of you living under a rock, LP recently upgraded from 35 gigs of storage space to 250 and from 800 gigs of data transfer to 2,500!!!! Holy effing cow, is all I’ve got to say. But there’s more on our upgrades here, plus a nifty quote from our CEO. ;)

Speaking of big news, this shocked me when I found it last night. Tiara was minding her own business, trying to get on Wordpress to blog, when she (why did I switch to 3rd person??) came upon the news of the CENTURY: YouTube Overtakes Myspace on Alexa Rankings. Read up on this phenomenon. While Alexa may not mean what it used to, it’s still a huge indication of what’s happening on the web, and the fact that Myspace was overwhelmed by YouTubers doesn’t surprise me. ;) Tiara no longer likes Myspace, btw.

And for more on YouTube, read the news blip about their near-leap into the television realm:

This next link is a pretty interesting take on the web porn industry. Yes, I said PORN. Haha, I bolded that to get your attention. Now read on: Personally, I think it’s kind of dumb if they’re not going to go all out and force .xxx on people registering porn sites, but honestly, that’s not my main arena. :D

And duh, we couldn’t have wrapped up this week’s Friday Favs without mentioning the coveted Apple iphone: For nearly $500, I’m curious. My roommate on the other hand about drooled all over herself and said, “This would be the one time in my life I’d get the tech-savvy gadget of the year!!” ;)

Web design has now truly evolved into an awesome “tool” on the Internet. We can create any type of visual experience for any type of genre. Using flash and sometimes incorporating video with cutting-edge software packages, we can make the highest level of interactive web experiences imaginable. Stuff ya dream about :).

The coolest part about it is that we are still very much in the infancy of the Internet. We continuously work to harness its fascinating power and reach for a connection with everyone in the world . Our newest site, which we hope to launch by Jan 1, 2007, will demonstrate the use of flash, video, Maya and After Effects (and some other cool programs) to create a sick cool, surreal visual and interactive experience that flows with heart pounding sound. Stunning visual effects are quickly followed by cool and even funny movements to make you laugh, and voice overs that we had done by the brilliant Jack Dennis (who many will recognize from hollywood trailers and a ton of commercials – yeah, he’s THAT guy).

Once we launch I will advise on this blog and of course we will give the user the option of entering the new site OR our current site and we will be offering a toned down, basic html site so any user can see what we do, even via cell phone.

All this and a bag of doritos (and a coke or pepsi) are in the works and on the way soon to a computer screen near you. SO GET TICKETS! Front row seats still available…

Author: Amy Armitage

Lunarpages Web Hosting today announced massive increases to the storage space and data transfer on their Business and Basic plans.

The Basic Plan now boasts 35 gigabytes of storage and 800 gigabytes of data transfer, the Business Plan 50 Gigabytes of storage and 1 terabyte of data transfer. Lunarpages Executives also have a clear message to send their competitors.

Amy Armitage with Lunarpages Business Development and Marketing says “Honestly, do our shared customers need all of this extra bandwidth and space? Will they even use it? I doubt it. Lately, checking out hosting review sites and offerings of other hosts I’m incredibly concerned about the credibility of the industry as a whole. The reality is Lunarpages do need to remain competitive but we feel it is more important to concentrate on our service, reputation and our customers. For months I’ve cringed every time another press release lands in my inbox about data transfer increases that can’t always be responsibly delivered in a shared hosting environment. Can we deliver all of this transfer? Yes of course. Will this motivate our customers to suddenly become educated in ways to increase their traffic, probably not.”

These enhancements have not affected the affordability of web hosting with Lunarpages; in fact their prices have remained unchanged for several years. As always, when Lunarpages increases their offerings the benefits are passed on to their loyal webmasters by awarding the upgrades to all hosted accounts. In August the addition of $700 of CoffeeCup Webmaster Software was given to their entire community, along with the option to purchase extra domains at $2.99 each. Yet another reason Lunarpages continues to lead as an innovator and reputable example of quality web hosting.

Ron Riddle CEO of Lunarpages Web Hosting says “The upgrades are simply cosmetic. We all know it and our customers know it. If our webmasters can make use of the extra space and transfer allowance and increase their traffic significantly, fantastic! We will back up our offerings as always. However, hopefully this will serve as a message to our peers to stop devaluing shared hosting and focus on what matters – Hosting websites, keeping them online, and providing responsive and quality support for your community.”

Lunarpages would like to see a united stand made by the handful of quality and reputable hosts remaining in the industry. Amy Armitage says “If compliance and realistic limits and price points can be agreed upon, the winners will not only be our customers, they will be our businesses, because we will continue to be profitable, reputable, to grow, and best of all be eternal.”

What is your name and position with Lunarpages.com?

Amy Armitage. I head up our Business Development and Sales & Marketing Team. I have been working with Lunarpages for over 6 years.

Please tell us the year established and brief history of Lunarpages.com?

Lunarpages was established in the summer of 2000. We started out giving away free web hosting and as business started to boom, we created additional paid plans and services. Today we have over 1500 servers housed in two data centers (Las Angeles & Vegas) with over 100 employees.

What do you offer your customers that are unique to your company?

Customer service and retention is a huge focus for us. We believe that if a customer is set up and educated/supported correctly, they will remain with us for as long as they need web hosting services. We also have multiple options to allow for the growth of a Website so that we can accommodate all hosting requirements.

Recently we teamed up with CoffeeCup Software to provide their entire library of webmaster and web design programs free with any 12 or 24 month plan.

We also offer a free domain name with our plans and for those customers who need additional domains we make these available for only $2.99 each. The unique aspect of this is that when it’s time to renew those domains, we honor the purchase price and will do this for as long as the customer is hosted with Lunarpages.

Lunarpages opened community forums back in 2000 and today we have a thriving and friendly community of customers and staff who provide additional support to each other. We believe that honesty and openness is the best way to communicate and assist potential and existing customers. We don’t censor our boards and if a customer has an issue and they verbalize negative feedback we work candidly and publicly with them to find a resolution. The strength of this is that the real issues encountered with any hosting company are highlighted. The difference is we actively work with our customers to provide a mutually beneficial outcome and the process and the reality of hosting issues & challenges are not hidden from people.

Due to our amazing success and our community conscience we wanted to give back to our community in a charitable way. As most of us are parents of children who attend public schools our CEO initiated an Education Program at Lunarpages where we provide free web hosting to ALL USA PUBLIC SCHOOLS K-12! We are very proud of this project and the interest and appreciation from schools, parents, students and teachers has been overwhelming.

Lastly I think it’s important to note that our employees are passionate about our company. Our core team has been with Lunarpages since the beginning. When you contribute to building and growing a company a sense of pride and protectiveness prevails. As a result we work tirelessly to make sure our customers are nurtured and happy, our servers are online and reliable and the rest of our team and partners are ensured a bright future as a result of our successes.

What is the most challenging aspect to offering Budget Hosting?

For me it’s watching other web hosts virtually destroy the value of the services we all offer by over promising space and bandwidth they are unable to deliver and at prices that are certainly not profitable. Many new companies come into our line of business and run at a loss by reducing our industry standards, selling under priced and under supported plans, and then they are gone. Where does that leave the customers or the rest of us?

What is it that makes Lunarpages.com a competitive company in the Budget Hosting market?

We support and also educate our clientele. We listen and implement their feedback and requests and we always look after our existing customers first when increasing our offerings. Our prices have never increased, we are profitable and stable and we don’t have an exit strategy. We’re not going anywhere ;)

What new features have Lunarpages.com added for its customers in the past year?

We increased our space and bandwidth, $2.99 domains, $700 of CoffeeCup Webmaster and Design Software free with all 12 and 24 month plans, live chat, Windows & Dedicated Hosting, an additional datacenter and around 50 more staff to optimize our support services.

What would you say is Lunarpages.com #1 asset to its customer base?

We answer our phones! Real people..

Where do you see Lunarpages.com and the web hosting industry in three years?

I don’t necessarily believe we will be the largest leading web host out there, but then our goal is to maintain our high level of support and retention. I think we will see consistent growth, additional data centers, the introduction of VPS, most likely additional offices in other parts of the world and hopefully a company jet for those shopping sprees in Paris ;)

I think over the next couple of years due to the reckless decisions of many of the current web hosts, a huge percentage of our competitors will go broke and the stable and solid companies who have been servicing webmasters for years will rise again.

How many customers do you currently have?

Around 100,000

Do you own your own datacenter?

Not at this time. We operate 2 data centers and we have plans to purchase our own shortly.

Where are your servers located?

One Wilshire in Los Angeles and marquisnet.com in Las Vegas.

What kind of back up power do they provide?

Both of our datacenters provide battery backup and gas generators.

Do they have multiple backbone connections?

Yes, One Wilshire is the third most connected building in the world, mzima and Marquis have multiple backbones.

What connections do they have?

Redundant OC3 fiber links

Do you offer 24/7 support?

Absolutely!

Do you have technicians present 24/7 or 9-5 M-F?

Yes. We certainly do.

What is your average turn-around time on a support ticket?

It depends on how busy the day is. For example if we are seeing routing issues with a specific ISP it might be 2 hours. Generally, around 30 minutes to 1 hour on email support tickets. If an issue requires escalation or specific installations or server side changes, it can take longer.

Do you charge your clients for support? If so, please explain.

NO WAY! Our support is included with their hosting plan.

Do you offer a money back guarantee?

Yes we offer a 30 day money back guarantee and for our customers using our transfer offer (http://www.lunarpages.com/special_offer.php) we increase that to a 90 day money back term.

Thank you!

July 25, 2006 – The response and feedback from customers at Lunarpages.com has the industry wondering how they can register domain names at these prices? Can the smaller Web hosts compete with this new level of rivalry or even survive it?

Lunarpages.com a multi award winning Californian based Web hosting company already provides a free domain for life to their customers. This week the company announced a special on additional domain names cutting the price from $14.95 to $2.99 each for a limited time to new and existing customers.

“We have been in business for almost 6 years, and the industry has become insanely competitive recently. Every day we see other hosts dropping prices to the point that we know they are running at a loss. Offers of massive disc space that will rarely be utilized and data transfer on shared servers comparable to dedicated hosting means the big O – Overselling” Amy Armitage of Lunarpages Web Hosting said in a company press reslease.

“We won’t compromise our business model, server stability or uptime by overselling which will leave our customers feeling cheated and forced to upgrade to a dedicated server. To remain competitive we have found another way to enhance our offerings, without compromising the level of service and support that has earned us the reputation as leaders and veterans in the Web hosting industry. Low priced domain names and partnerships with leading companies enable us to give back to our customers without resulting in a price increase to them.”

Other registrars and hosts lure a customer in with a cheap domain name, and come renewal time domain name registration costs increase up to 500% and this not only stings the customer, but tarnishes the industry’s reputation in general. Lunarpages’ offer is superior because domains purchased during this special period will be renewed at the original price ($2.99 for 1 year or $5.95 for 2 years) for as long as the customer is hosted with them.

Rumor has it that Lunarpages will be announcing their partnership with an Internet 500 Company in the next few weeks enhancing their offerings and increasing their sales three fold.

“I researched the current domain name register offers out there, read the bad press and general grumblings of hosted customers utilizing domain deals with our competitors and created a marketing concept without these limitations” said Amy Armitage

Rumor has it that Lunarpages will be announcing their partnership with an Internet 500 Company in the next few weeks enhancing their offerings and increasing their sales three fold.

Betahosts: – Thanks for agreeing to this interview. Could you please tell us briefly about yourself and your role for Lunarpages?

Amy: It’s my pleasure! I started with Lunarpages in 2000 as a customer and active member on their community forums http://www.lunarforums.com As Lunarpages began to grow I started working as a Customer Support Representative, and was soon promoted to Manage all remote services from my location in Australia. For the last 12 months, I have been heading up their Sales and Marketing Department in California where we also focus on retention, affiliate relationships, business opportunities and partnerships, customer care and design services.

Betahosts: Could you please share with us when was Lunarpages founded?

Amy: Lunarpages was founded Summer 2000 by Ron Riddle and Maximilian Andersen.

Betahosts: How do you promote your business/web site?

Amy: A huge portion of our business comes from customer referrals and affiliate sales as a result of customers who are delighted with their hosting. Lunarpages has received numerous awards, specifically for our Customer Service and uptime. We also advertise on several various Web Hosting review magazines and sites and we’re constantly trying different strategies that are out of the box. Our founder Ron Riddle is a dynamic and inspiring man whose motto is “There are no rules”.

Betahosts: What is your best selling product?

Amy: Our best selling product is our Basic plan http://lunarpages.com/plan1.php It’s jam packed with features and the price is affordable specifically for new webmasters and small businesses.

Betahosts: Please define your marketing strategies. What do you think that is your strength for Lunarpages, as compared to your major competitors?

Amy: Customer Service, uptime, reliability, attention to detail. If you contact Lunarpages, you receive an email response within an hour and when you phone us, you speak with a real person. Our Customer Service Reps are highly trained and located at our facility (not out sourced), so your first interaction with them is usually the only one required to assist you with your support needs. We advertise my direct contact details online, so if a customer has an issue that is not resolved to their satisfaction, they are invited to contact me and I’ll work tirelessly for a resolution that pleases them.

Betahosts: What is your marketing goal/plan for Lunarpages now? How do you see yourself and your company in the next 5 years?

Amy: World domination would be ideal, however realistically our plans are to continue to grow at the same rate we have over the last 6 years, so that we can maintain our support services and uptime. Of course, we would be thrilled to double, or even triple our sales, however if this means that the quality of our service and support is compromised, then this is not what we want to see happen. I think the reason Lunarpages stands out in this industry is because we look after our existing customers, and we don’t make promises we are unable to keep. We are growing at a controlled rate by choice.

Betahosts: What have been your biggest achievements as a company? Have you won any awards?

Amy: Yes we have won several awards – http://lunarpages.com/awards.php

Our most satisfying achievement has been our FREE Education program. We provide free web hosting to any public school in America. Due to our success, we are in a unique position to give back to our community. Check it out at http://lunarpages.com/education.php

Betahosts: What aspect of your work do you find the most demanding and how do you navigate it?

Amy: Burnout I think is the biggest issue working online. Back in the days when I was working tech support I would spend an average of 16 hours a day online working 7 days a week and I was unable to identify when I was becoming stressed or burnt out. Now, I actually turn off my phone and computer when I sleep (it’s taken a HUGE amount of control to achieve this!)

Betahosts: What do you do to enjoy yourself outside working hours, or are you like many in the industry, always online?

Amy: I’m always close to my computer working, checking sales, responding to tickets, forum posts and chatting online with associates at work. I think we are a unique group of people who love their work and the environment. The beauty of my job is that I can work from my home, while I travel, at the office, or even using my phone. I love to play Texas hold ‘em, so I spend my off time doing that online sometimes. Last year I was heavily into playing EverQuest, however I found the time commitment was too much.

My husband and I often daydream about winning the Lotto and how it would change our lives. When we start imagining and strategizing I realize something.. I don’t want to relax on a beach, or travel for months and never work again. I LOVE my job! I am committed to Lunarpages and our community. I’m already living my dream. How cool is that?

Betahosts: what do you think is going to be the next big thing on the Internet and how do you think it will impact people’s lives?

Amy: If I knew I’d create it and make my fortune ;)

Betahosts: Thanks Amy for the wonderful interview!

La Habra, California – (Cheap Hosting Directory) – September 13, 2005 – A widespread power outage hit Los Angeles on Monday, knocking out electricity to nearly half the city, snarling traffic and stranding high-rise office workers in elevators or trains as officials scrambled to determine the cause. The power outage left dozens of Los Angeles based web hosts without power.Hundreds of thousands of business, E-commerce and personal web sites went dark for several hours as their sites and emails were inaccessible. The impact of the power failure caused millions of dollars in online revenue to be lost while businesses sat helpless without the use of their emails or their online stores.

Lunarpages’ emergency procedures allowed their customers’ web sites and email to remain 100% functional throughout the outage.Lee Coleman, Director of Technology for Lunarpages explained the emergency processes, ”Our experience with the 2001 California power outages as well as our planning and testing for other potentially harmful events have prepared us for this type of crisis. We have taken every preventative measure possible to ensure our service reliability in the face of any event that could disrupt our customers’ online businesses. I am happy to say, our redundant systems and emergency power protocols passed this test with flying colors.”

Lunarpages’ reputation as a reliable web hosting service once again remained strong as the company demonstrated that it is ready for any contingency.

Lunarpages representatives indicated that they have received a significant increase in sales inquiries from customers who were affected by the outage and they are reporting an estimated 53% rise in new sales today from last Monday.

Trey Gardner, Director of Sales and Marketing commented on the trend, ”Many of the webmasters affected by this power failure asked for proof that our clients’ sites were still up and we provided that for them. We also made sure that those customers migrating to us took advantage of our Special Transfer Hosting Offer so that they would not lose any of the financial investment they had made with the companies they were leaving.”

The overwhelmingly positive response proved that customers looking for affordable hosting put a premium on uptime and reliability. Lunarpages’ 99.9% uptime even in the face of a city-wide power outage has reassured existing and new customers that Lunarpages is serious about providing the best web hosting for their dollar.

“Educating our youth is extremely important and donating web space to schools is a small contribution that could potentially make a big impact on students, teachers and parents across the country,” said Ron Riddle, CEO and co-founder of Lunarpages. “We welcome any district administrator, school principal or classroom teacher to participate in this unique program.”

Schools and districts can take advantage of this program to create websites that serve a variety of purposes, including:

* Facilitating communication between teachers and parents

* Sharing information between schools within a district or classrooms within a school

Business Wire, Jan 3, 2005

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The web host Lunarpages has tripled its customer base and experienced explosive revenue growth as a result of a brand and website makeover by CEONEX (www.CEONEX.com). Besides attracting new business, Lunarpages has also experienced a 25% decrease in customer turnover after the project with Ceonex, which provides interactive solutions and Internet development services to a variety of industries.

Despite Lunarpages’ extensive reputation as a web host of high regard, their old site failed to communicate that professional image. In mid-2003, the company contacted Ceonex, with the goal of increasing customer conversion rates and create a strong, memorable brand.

Ceonex noticed several significant problems with Lunarpages’ old site that needed to be solved during the redesign, including lack of strong and memorable brand; unprofessional image; inappropriate imagery; and lack of depth.

“For Lunarpages, there was a large gap between their current site and the potential for creating an exciting and immersive brand experience for customers and prospects,” said Eireann Kiley, Strategy Consultant for Ceonex. “We were particularly eager to have the opportunity to fill this gap.”

Ceonex’s challenge was to convey the strength of Lunarpages’ service offerings and create a complete experience for site visitors, in order to immerse them in the Lunarpages brand. “Bringing a professional image to the site would not only raise Lunarpages’ esteem in the eyes of potential prospects, but also reinforce their value to existing customers,” said Kiley. “We saw an opportunity to bring out the best in Lunarpages by recreating their brand and image – thereby increasing their conversion rates and decreasing customer turnover.”

The core issue was inattention to the creation and reinforcement of a fundamental brand message. Visitors to their home page received no cues to orient themselves within the Lunarpages brand, the company’s identity or value proposition. Ceonex developed a powerful core theme for Lunarpages, then presented it through effective use of imagery, logo, colors and layout – placing the customer at the center of a fully branded lunar environment.

Maximilliam Andersen, CTO/Vice President of Lunarpages, said, “Ceonex increased our revenue by more than 15% per month on a consistent and ongoing basis. We achieved incredible results from an incredible effort by the Ceonex team, and are very pleased with the business benefits we have received by working with them.”

The results have compounded over time, with the customer count growing from 20,000 to nearly 75,000. Besides the increases in revenue and customer conversion, Lunarpages’ Andersen noted that customer turnover has also decreased by approximately 25% overall.
